Learn How Occupational Therapy Specialties Advance Your Occupational Therapy Career

Occupational therapy certification is a wise career move on many levels; for one, it helps the OT build on an existing base of knowledge and achieve excellence—not only in overall performance, but in the more finite skills related to a particular area of practice.

Occupational therapy specialties provide formal recognition for OTs with advanced clinical knowledge and experience, increasing the likelihood of better pay and preferential treatment in hiring.

Types of Occupational Therapy Specialties & Certifications

These two Advanced Practice areas represent the most popular certifications that OTs currently obtain.

Certified Hand Therapist, CHT

A Certified Hand Therapist (CHT) is an occupational therapist who has a minimum of five years of clinical experience, including 4,000 hours or more in direct practice in hand therapy. In addition, the Certified Hand Therapist has successfully passed a comprehensive test of advanced clinical skills and theory in upper quarter rehabilitation. Because of changes in the profession, every CHT is required to demonstrate continued professional development and competency by recertifying every five years. The Hand Therapy Certification Commission, Inc. (HTCC) is a not-for-profit corporation established in 1989 for the purpose of sponsoring a voluntary credentialing program.

Physical Agent Modalities, PAMs

A Credentialed Physical Agent Modalities Practitioner is an occupational therapist that has obtained the necessary education and demonstrated knowledge through testing and clinical preparedness to use physical agent modalities in their practice. This credential identifies those Occupational Therapists who are qualified to use physical agent modalities as part of their routine practice. Occupational Therapists that wish to obtain this advanced practice credential can utilize the Physical Agent Modalities Practitioner Credentialing Agency, LLC (PAMOCA)
